Frequently Asked Questions

What is a premium sale?

A "premium only" livestock sale at a County Fair is a type of auction where bidders are paying for the premium or bonus above the market price of the animal. In this format, the seller (often a 4-H or FFA member) retains ownership of the animal and later sells it at market value separately. The premium paid by the bidder is essentially a donation or reward for the hard work and dedication the young exhibitor put into raising the animal.

This type of sale is common at fairs where the focus is on supporting youth agriculture programs. The premium helps fund future projects or educational endeavors for the exhibitors, while the animal's market value is still realized through a separate sale.

What is a multiple buyer form?

A multiple buyer form is used in livestock auctions, particularly in "premium only" sales, to allow multiple buyers to contribute collectively to the premium for a single animal. Instead of one person paying the full premium amount, several individuals or businesses can pool their contributions. Each buyer's name and contribution amount are listed on the form.

This approach allows more people to support the exhibitor without having to make a large financial commitment. It also helps raise more money for the youth involved, as multiple smaller contributions can add up to a significant premium.

What is an add-on?

An "add-on form" is used in livestock auctions to allow individuals or businesses to contribute additional money to a specific exhibitor’s premium after the auction has ended. Unlike the bidding process during the live auction, where premiums are raised in real-time, an add-on form gives people the opportunity to support an exhibitor later, even if they didn't participate in the auction directly. This process is particularly helpful for those who may not be able to attend the auction but still want to support the youth involved.

What is a bulk add-on?

A "bulk add-on" is a variation of the add-on where a single individual or organization contributes additional funds to multiple exhibitors rather than just one. This allows the donor to spread their support across several participants, providing smaller amounts to each, rather than a large amount to one.

This process can be especially useful for businesses or community organizations that want to support the broader youth community rather than singling out individual exhibitors. Bulk add-ons help ensure that more exhibitors receive financial support, which can also be particularly meaningful for those who may not have received high premiums during the auction itself.
